Mediterranean mountain. Snow possible at summit December-March. Spectacular autumn.
Montseny Natural Park, Barcelona bikers' favourite weekend route. Ancient beech forests, springs, technical mountain roads and the Biosphere Reserve closest to the big city.
Montseny is Barcelona's quintessential mountain and, for the thousands of riders in the Catalan capital, the most beloved weekend escape. This massif, designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a Parc Natural by the Generalitat, rises to 1,706 m (Turó de l'Home) just 50 km from central Barcelona, and packs a repertoire of mountain roads covering every register: from gentle secondary roads winding between farmhouses and holm oaks to technical passes with hairpin bends through centuries-old beech forests.
The BV-5114 road climbing from Sant Celoni to Santa Fe del Montseny is the classic stretch: a 15-km ascent through a beech forest that in autumn turns red, yellow, and orange, creating a chromatic tunnel that is one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in Catalunya. Santa Fe del Montseny, at 1,130 m, is a plateau with a historic hotel, a Romanesque chapel, and a monumental beech grove where centuries-old trees form a vegetal cathedral.
The full Montseny circuit for riders includes the climb to Turó de l'Home (1,706 m, the massif's summit) via the military road GIV-5201, which is narrow, technical, and offers views across all of central Catalunya; the descent toward Viladrau through oak and chestnut forests; and the return via Tona and Centelles, completing a loop of about 130 km with over 2,000 metres of accumulated elevation gain. On fair-weather Saturdays and Sundays, the road fills with motorcycles (it is the unofficial meeting point for Barcelona's riders), creating a wonderfully friendly biker atmosphere.
Montseny cuisine is that of the inland Catalan mountains: botifarra amb mongetes (sausage with white beans), escudella i carn d'olla (Catalan stew with pilota), trinxat (cabbage and potato mash with bacon), and roasted chestnuts in autumn. The masía-restaurants of Montseny (Can Barrina, El Brull, Can Cuch) keep the tradition of mountain Catalan cooking alive with locally sourced ingredients.
Riding tips: Montseny is accessible almost year-round, but the road to Turó de l'Home may have snow from December to March. On fine weekends, motorcycle traffic is heavy (ride with caution). The roads are technical but well-maintained. Petrol stations in Sant Celoni, Viladrau, and Centelles. For accommodation, the Hotel Santa Fe del Montseny (a masía-hotel at 1,130 m) is the classic choice. Getting there from Barcelona: take the AP-7 motorway to Sant Celoni (40 minutes) and begin the climb.
