Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine

Founded in 1146 by Premonstratensian canons, with Abbot Bernardo arriving from Prémontré (France), the Abbey of Santa María de Retuerta was for centuries a center of spirituality and viticulture on the Castilian plateau. After the disentailment of Mendizábal in the 19th century, the abbey passed into private hands and gradually declined until it was almost in ruins. In 1988 Sandoz (now Novartis) acquired the estate and, after a restoration between 2006 and 2012, brought it back to life, transforming the monastic quarters into luxury rooms while the refectory where monks shared their meals in silence became a Michelin-starred restaurant.

The restoration of the abbey, between 2006 and 2012, was an exercise in architectural archaeology. Every stone was cataloged, every fresco documented, every arch restored. The result is a dialogue between centuries: Romanesque cloisters and Gothic elements coexist with contemporary installations that respect the monastic essence. Noble materials—stone, oak wood, wrought iron—create an atmosphere of serene contemplation that the monks would recognize.

Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine is located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero wine region, surrounded by its own 700-hectare estate with vineyards. The Castilian landscape of rolling hills and century-old vines creates an atmosphere of total disconnection. The historic cities of Valladolid and Peñafiel, with its castle and Wine Museum, are nearby for cultural excursions.
