“19th-century military fortress transformed into a luxury retreat”
Cap Rocat emerges from the cliffs of the Bay of Palma as a 19th-century fortress transformed into a luxury hotel. The former military casemates are now suites with private pools, and the bunkers have become spa spaces with Mediterranean views.

Cap Rocat was built in the late 19th century as a military fortress to protect the Port of Palma following American intervention in Cuba and the Philippines. It is one of five fortresses from that era surrounding the Bay of Palma. The construction was so ingeniously integrated into the cliffs that, despite its enormous walls and bastions, the building cannot be seen from either land or sea. Mallorcan architect Antonio Obrador invested ten years in transforming the fortress into a luxury hotel, meticulously preserving historic architectural features: evocative battlements, watchtowers, trenches and courtyards. Cap Rocat opened on June 18, 2010 as part of the Marugal hotel portfolio.

Antonio Obrador created a perfect symbiosis between military heritage and contemporary luxury. The former arsenals and ammunition depots became suites with thick stone walls. The cannon emplacements are now private terraces. The narrow streets that run through the complex, similar to ravines, convey absolute tranquility despite the martial atmosphere. The architect incorporated historic humorous details: bullets were transformed into door handles and cannon carriages into tables. The result earned the Europa Nostra Award for excellence in heritage conservation.

Cap Rocat stands on a spectacularly isolated promontory in the Bay of Palma, a strategic position that made it a military fortress and today offers the most dramatic views in Mallorca. The 88 acres of private estate include 2 km of pristine coastline and a Natural Park with special marine life and birds. Caló de la Reina, the hotel's private cove, is a Mediterranean gem accessible only to guests. Palma de Mallorca is only 15 minutes away, but the feeling of isolation is total.
