Why we love it

  • The first five-star luxury hotel of the Mandarin Oriental group in Southern Europe, opened in November 2009 in the heart of Passeig de Gràcia
  • The interior design by Patricia Urquiola, who created virtually all the furniture and accessories in collaboration with brands like B&B, Moroso and Molteni, including the Axor Urquiola faucet collection for the bathrooms
  • The Moments restaurant with 2 Michelin stars, led by legendary chef Carme Ruscalleda (seven Michelin stars total) alongside her son Raül Balam, with creative Catalan cuisine
  • The 1,000 m² spa based on ancestral Asian principles, where therapy begins with the sound of Tibetan cymbals and culminates in a state of absolute relaxation
  • The Banker's Bar, an elegant space integrated into what was the former vault of the bank that occupied the building

History

Mandarin Oriental Barcelona opened its doors in November 2009, becoming the first five-star luxury hotel of the exclusive Mandarin Oriental group in Southern Europe. The hotel occupies a mid-20th century building that functioned as a bank, completely renovated under the direction of architect Carlos Ferrater and his Barcelona-based Studio OAB. The transformation of the former bank building into a luxury hotel was a project that respected the architecture and history of the building while incorporating the Catalan spirit in every detail.

The architectural design was led by Spanish architects Carlos Ferrater and Joan Trias de Bes, while renowned designer Patricia Urquiola was in charge of the spectacular and multifaceted interior design. With sensitivity toward the architecture and history of the building and the Catalan spirit in mind, Urquiola created 120 bright rooms that capture the contemporary and clean personality of the hotel. Unique carpets, wooden floors and classic white walls give each room a modern character with oriental touches. In the suites, she combined luxurious fabrics of leather, velvet and exquisite silks alongside elegant woods in a rich palette of greens, blacks and golds. All bathrooms are equipped with the Axor Urquiola collection she designed in collaboration with Hansgrohe AG.
