History

The Majestic Hotel Inglaterra opened its doors in April 1918 in a neoclassical building on Passeig de Gràcia, being announced as a great social event by the Diario de Barcelona on April 28, 1918. Shortly after its opening, it was acquired by Martín Casals Galcerán, owner of the adjoining building at number 68 Passeig de Gràcia, who decided to expand and remodel the hotel. In 1940, it was renamed the Majestic Hotel. For more than a century, the hotel has hosted illustrious personalities such as poets Antonio Machado and Federico García Lorca, artists Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso, singer Josephine Baker and writer Ernest Hemingway. Antonio Machado spent his last days in Spain at the hotel before leaving for Collioure, France. During the Spanish Civil War in 1938, war correspondents from around the world covered the Battle of the Ebro from the Majestic. In 1996, the hotel played a critical role in the signing of the 'Majestic Pact', representing an acceptance of Catalan nationalism. From 1996 and 1997, the hotel hosted the prestigious New Art exhibition, with more than 11,000 visitors coming to see the latest artistic trends from 50 Spanish and international galleries. Today it is still owned by the Soldevila-Casals family, maintaining its commitment to hotel excellence and art.

The neoclassical building at Passeig de Gràcia 68 announces its presence with a stately façade that has witnessed more than a century of Barcelona's history. The real surprise awaits inside, where more than 1,000 pieces of modern and contemporary art are on display. The corridors and public spaces function as a roving art gallery. The interior design combines refined elegance with contemporary touches, maintaining the historic character while incorporating modern conveniences. La Dolce Vita rooftop terrace, awarded Best Urban Terrace in Europe in 2019, offers an urban sanctuary with unparalleled views of Passeig de Gràcia and modernist architecture.
