Hotel Landa

Burgos, €€€

A gothic tower rebuilt stone by stone

About the hotel

Hotel Landa is an architectural whim: a 14th century Gothic tower dismantled stone by stone and rebuilt next to Burgos. Its restaurant is a temple of Castilian gastronomy - lamb, Burgos blood sausage, fresh cheese - and its wine cellar holds treasures from the Ribera del Duero.

History

Hotel Landa was founded in 1959 by Madrid lawyer Jesús Landa and his wife Carmela Vicente from Burgos. The modest restaurant was originally established in a potato field next to the A-1 highway, one of Spain's main north-south arteries. In 1964, Jesús opened a hotel inside a 14th-century tower that he moved from the nearby village of Albillos to the Landa property, where he rebuilt it stone by stone. 'I bought a castle,' Jesus told his wife in a conversation recalled by his daughter Victoria, now the sole owner. 'And I am the Vatican,' Carmela replied humorously. The property was originally a 14th century defensive tower and was rebuilt piece by piece. Two years later (1966), Landa debuted a spacious new dining room and 37 rooms designed by noted Spanish interior designer Pascua Ortega, decorator to royalty. The hotel has been in the hands of the Landa family ever since, who have expanded and transformed the former castle into romantic accommodations. The Landa family's involvement in the hotel business dates back to the early 20th century with the Real Club de Puerta de Hierro in Madrid and La Perla in San Sebastian. The hotel was frequented at the time by personalities such as Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren.

The 14th century Gothic tower is the beating heart of the hotel, meticulously moved from Albillos and rebuilt stone by stone on the manicured grounds of the property. Most of the 24 suites are located in this carefully reconstructed defensive tower. Antique furnishings and tiled floors give the rooms an authentic historic feel. The interior design was conceived by Pascua Ortega in 1966, one of Spain's foremost interior designers and decorator to royalty. The hotel combines medieval Gothic architecture with mid-20th century design elements, creating a romantic palace that evokes Castilian history. The dining room features old-style vaulted ceilings, perfect for enjoying authentic Castilian cuisine. The gardens are meticulously manicured and the property includes seasonal outdoor pools and a heated indoor pool.

The Surroundings

Hotel Landa is located 2 kilometers north of Burgos, strategically located next to the N-I highway (A-1 freeway), the main route connecting Madrid with the north of Spain. The location offers easy access to the historic center of Burgos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its majestic Gothic cathedral, one of Spain's Gothic masterpieces built between the 13th and 16th centuries. The surrounding area includes the Camino de Santiago, which passes through Burgos as one of its most important stages. The Burgos region is famous for its Castilian gastronomy, especially roast suckling lamb and Burgos black pudding, and for its Ribera del Duero wines. The hotel grounds offer manicured gardens that provide a haven of peace just minutes from the monumental city.
