In the historic center of Cáceres
Toño Pérez and José Polo opened Restaurante Atrio in 1986 in Cáceres. Chef Toño Pérez trained with Arzak in San Sebastián, at the Jockey in Madrid, at Chez Bruneau in Brussels and at El Bulli in Roses. The current hotel and restaurant project took seven years to materialize, culminating in a building that has received the prestigious FAD Architecture Prize. It is the final legacy of architect Luis M. Mansilla, who passed away in 2012, and his partner Emilio Tuñón Álvarez, who together have redesigned many of Spain's major museums in recent decades. Although the project faced resistance from local residents during the construction phase, today the building is considered a masterpiece delicately integrated into the medieval urban fabric.
Architect
Luis M. Mansilla and Emilio Tuñón (hotel), Carlos Martínez Albornoz (wine cellar)
The Atrio universe comprises three distinctive properties. Hotel Atrio is a space reinterpreted by architects Emilio Tuñón and Luis Mansilla, an architectural manifesto that harmoniously combines cutting-edge design with historical context. The 15th-century Palacio Paredes Saavedra was restored by architects Tuñón and Albornoz, preserving original vaults and arches while overlaying light wood walls and polished concrete floors, giving the interiors an ethereal glow. The circular wine cellar, designed by Carlos Martínez Albornoz and cared for by José Polo over the years, is an imposing and silent space that houses the great treasures of world oenology.
Extremadura
Atrio is located in the heart of Cáceres' historic center, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monumental Extremaduran city preserves one of the most complete urban ensembles from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, with palaces, churches and towers creating a unique setting for the gastronomic experience. The cobblestone streets, porticoed squares and stately palaces surround the restaurant and accommodations, allowing guests to immerse themselves in centuries of history while enjoying one of Spain's most avant-garde culinary proposals.
