Stately Eixample

History

The building was constructed in 1892 as the Palacio Vedruna, residence of the Counts of Vedruna, one of the first stately buildings to occupy a chamfered corner in Barcelona's Eixample district. For decades it served as an aristocratic residence in the heart of Barcelona's Eixample district. In 1992, after a major renovation led by the prestigious architects Bohigas, Martorell and Mackay, the palace was transformed into the Hotel Claris, part of the Derby Hotels Collection. Art collector and scholar Jordi Clos acquired the building and converted it into a unique museum-hotel, furnishing the second floor with pre-Columbian art, placing Egyptian carvings, Turkish kilims and Indian sculptures in the rooms, and adorning the reception with a 5th century Roman mosaic. The hotel was granted Special Monument status for its more than 400 pieces of original art on display.

Restoration

1992

The Vedruna Palace maintains its original 1892 neoclassical façade, protected by the Architectural Heritage Inventory of Catalonia. The 1992 renovation by Bohigas, Martorell and Mackay fused 19th-century architecture with contemporary design, creating 124 newly renovated rooms and suites. The spaces feature handcrafted furnishings, elegant decor and full soundproofing. The lobby is highlighted by a 5th-century Roman mosaic. Smart rooms feature LCD satellite TVs, sofas and pieces of Roman, Egyptian and Indian art. The Museum Room on the second floor showcases pre-Columbian culture with figures from Mesoamerica, human representations from western Mexican cultures, and statues of Costa Rican warriors. The rooftop terrace with pool offers panoramic views of the Eixample.
