Gran Hotel Son Net

The estate was first named Son Net in 1453. According to legend, the land surrounding the hotel belonged to a nobleman who had excelled as a pirate in the 12th century, when Mallorca was feared in the region for its privateers. For centuries, Son Net was the heart of Puigpunyent, with the owner family living on the property and the peasants and servants in the village at the foot of the hill. The present shape and size of the manor house dates from 1672. When David Stein entered it in the early 1990s, he told Vanity Fair that the house was in the bones, with only a few dilapidated rooms. Stein first renovated it as his personal home, and after nine years decided to convert it into a luxury hotel in 1998. In 2023, after two and a half years of restoration under the direction of Lorenzo Castillo, the hotel reopened with an exquisite new look under the vision of art collector Javier Lopez Granados.

The Baroque estate built for the Net family in 1672 features a vine-covered pink terra cotta facade that is as elegant and refined on the inside as it is magnificent from the outside. David Stein sought 'not to be modern or fashionable' but 'to preserve the soul of the house'. Stone walls, carved wood ceilings, antique fireplaces and mosaic floors coexist with works by Hockney and Chagall. As The New York Times described: 'With its stone walls, its Hockneys and Chagalls, and its velvet fixtures, it's luxurious.' Interior designer Lorenzo Castillo, a specialist in classical decor, was responsible for the 2023 restoration, breathing new life into the hotel while preserving its soul.

The hotel is located in Puigpunyent, a picturesque village in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mountain range offers spectacular hiking and biking trails. Valldemossa, where Chopin composed during his stay with George Sand, is nearby. The west coast of Mallorca with crystal clear coves is accessible by car. Palma de Mallorca with its gothic cathedral and old town is 20 minutes away.
