History

Ciutadella was the historic capital of Menorca until the British invasion in 1708 during the War of the Spanish Succession. When British and Dutch forces captured the island, the initial town resisted the allied invasion with Bourbon loyalists mounting defenses using the medieval walls before surrendering after negotiations. In 1715, under British rule formalized by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, capital status was transferred to Mahon, which offered a superior natural harbor for naval operations. This 18th century manor house was built during the period of British rule, when Menorcan nobles and landowners wanted to show off their social and economic status by building true architectural gems that united local style with Italian and British trends of those centuries.

Architecture & Design

Construction

1750

The architecture of this stately home reflects the unique blend of cultural influences that characterized 18th century Menorca. The building combines elements of the Spanish Mediterranean tradition with British influences from the Georgian period, visible in the symmetrical moldings and proportions. The whitewashed courtyards typical of Menorcan architecture contrast with British architectural details, creating a distinctive fusion. The baroque style of the 18th century, more present in the western part of the island due to the reconstruction of Ciutadella after the Ottoman attack of 1558, coexists with the British classicism introduced during the occupation. The house is part of the group of stately residences built between the 17th and 19th centuries that characterize the historic center of Ciutadella.

The Surroundings

Islas Baleares

Located in the historic port of Ciutadella, the hotel is in the heart of the ancient capital of Menorca. The port is one of the smallest and most beautiful in the Mediterranean, a natural inlet protected from the Tramontana, the strong north wind that lashes the island. The historic center of Ciutadella maintains a noble and majestic air with stately palaces, the Gothic cathedral of the fourteenth century, and cobbled streets that evoke centuries of history. Ciutadella retains the elegance of times past with fine old Spanish palaces, Moorish influences and a wonderful old town center. Despite losing its status as the capital, the city has maintained its cultural and architectural relevance and is considered the most photogenic city in Menorca.
