The surrealist Madrid of Jaime Hayón

About the hotel

The Barceló Torre de Madrid occupies the emblematic skyscraper in Plaza de España, reinvented by Valencian designer Jaime Hayón. Its interior is a surreal journey through Spanish culture, with references to Dalí, Picasso and Buñuel's cinema. The panoramic views from the rooftop are incomparable.

Why we love it

  • The iconic 142-meter skyscraper built in 1957 and reinvented by Madrid designer Jaime Hayón, named by Wallpaper Magazine among the 100 best designers in the world.
  • Giant zebra-striped bear with brass top hat in the lobby, a nod to Madrid's coat of arms.
  • The Garra bar with gilded glazed ceramics, possibly the tallest bar furniture in the city, with Romanesque arches and emblems of Spanish culture in brass.
  • A visual journey through Spain's past that combines Arab, Moorish and Roman details with Hayón's characteristic playful aesthetics.
  • The characters, sculptures and masks from Hayón's vivid imagination that populate the public spaces and corridors of the nine floors of the hotel.

History

The 142-meter Torre Madrid building was built in 1957 and became an icon of the city. Nine of its thirty-four floors now house this ambitious hotel. As a native Madrileño, Jaime Hayón saw the opportunity to create something unique for the Barceló group in one of the city's most iconic buildings as a way to bring his signature talents to his hometown.

Jaime Hayón wanted to showcase the diversity and richness of Madrid through his design, mixing traditional architectural elements and a jewel-toned color palette with fantastic sculptures and art pieces. A deep and rich color palette was used, along with finishes reminiscent of the Arab, Moorish and Roman influences that had played a role in shaping Spain's culture and architecture. Many of the furniture and lighting fixtures used in the hotel come from Hayón's multiple collaborations with Fritz Hansen, &Tradition, Gubi, Arflex, Cassina and BD Barcelona. Each unique detail lends the ambiance of a boutique hotel but taken to a nine-story scale that only a true grand hotel can provide.

The Surroundings

Madrid

The hotel overlooks the renovated Plaza de España, in the heart of Madrid. The Gran Vía, the city's most famous shopping and entertainment artery, is at the foot of the hotel. The Royal Palace and the Sabatini Gardens are a short walk away. The Temple of Debod, with its sunset views over Madrid, is nearby.
