Why we love it

  • The spa located in the ancient Roman baths in the basement, with Roman columns flanking the courtyard and thermal immersion pools
  • The unique fusion of architectural styles: Moorish elements from the Al-Andalus era, Gothic from the Reconquista, 16th-century Renaissance, 19th-century Neoclassical and contemporary design
  • The 53 rooms distributed around four Andalusian courtyards, where hand-painted stucco walls and centuries-old frescoes coexist with decidedly modern furniture
  • The collection of 17th-century paintings and original Roman mosaics discovered during the 1990s archaeological excavations

History

Hospes Palacio del Bailío is located on a site with a long history dating back to Roman times when Córdoba was known as Corduba. The palace foundations and some architectural elements are believed to date from this period, when the building served as a Roman Domus. The palace was built in the 16th century and houses invaluable Roman remains as well as a collection of 17th-century paintings. During Moorish rule in Córdoba, the palace passed to aristocratic families of the era, and some Moorish design elements can still be seen in the current structure. With the Christian Reconquest of Córdoba in the 13th century, the palace changed hands again, with architectural modifications mixing Moorish and Gothic styles. In the 19th century, Neoclassical reforms were carried out, and in the 20th century the palace became a hospital. In the 1990s, a meticulous restoration process began that included archaeological excavations revealing ancient Roman mosaics and the remains of the impressive Roman Domus.

Roman ruins, carved Moorish doors, Tuscan-inspired frescoes and 16th-century Spanish architecture create a cultural and historical potpourri of heritage, brought into modernity by sculptural lamps and elegant contemporary furniture. The 53 rooms maintain the building's historical nature: each is decorated with original stone elements or period art, while at the same time offering comfortable modern furniture and spacious marble bathrooms. Some rooms feature egg-shaped bathtubs. The accommodations combine old and new, with hand-painted stucco walls and centuries-old frescoes while the furniture is decidedly modern.

The Surroundings

Andalucía

Hospes Palacio del Bailío is located in Córdoba's historic heart, just steps from the Mosque-Cathedral, a World Heritage Site. The neighborhood preserves the layout of the Roman and Muslim city, with narrow streets, flower-filled courtyards and porticoed squares. The Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs, the Roman Bridge and the Jewish Quarter complete a setting of extraordinary historical richness where every stone tells centuries of coexistence between cultures.
