Ribera del Duero is the DO for reds made from Tinto Fino, the local name for Tempranillo, and its Wine Route stretches some 115 km along the Duero across Burgos, Segovia, Soria and Valladolid. Come to pair big names like Protos, Emilio Moro and Arzuaga with the underground cellars dug beneath Aranda de Duero and in cellar quarters such as El Cotarro in Moradillo de Roa.

1- or 2-day route
The Wine Route runs some 115 km from east to west, so over two days it makes sense to split it in half: first the stretch between Peñafiel and Quintanilla de Onésimo in Valladolid province, then east towards Aranda de Duero in Burgos.
Day 1. Peñafiel, Pesquera de Duero, Valbuena de Duero and Quintanilla de Onésimo
- Peñafiel: the Provincial Wine Museum is inside the castle (closed on Mondays; admission €6). Then Bodegas Protos, where the tour covers its underground ageing cellar and the Richard Rogers building. For something more homespun, Bodega Tradicional La Olmilla shows a traditional cave cellar and pours wine from a clay jug; book by email.
- Pesquera de Duero: Bodegas Emilio Moro, or Bodega Tinto Pesquera, whose two-hour tour includes a barrel tasting.
- Valbuena de Duero: the grape-variety garden at Bodega Emina, on a one-hour guided tour.
- Quintanilla de Onésimo: Finca Villacreces, or the short 45-minute tour at Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro. Stay at Hotel & Spa Arzuaga, the winery's own hotel, with a wine-therapy spa and the Taller restaurant.
Day 2. Pedrosa de Duero, La Horra, Moradillo de Roa and Aranda de Duero
- Pedrosa de Duero: Pago de los Capellanes, open to visitors Tuesday to Saturday.
- La Horra: Viña Sastre, weekday mornings only, with a maximum of 10 people per tour.
- Moradillo de Roa: El Cotarro, an 18,000 m² cellar quarter with 157 underground cellars on up to four levels and 7 cave wine presses, dug into the hill below the church of San Pedro.
- Quintana del Pidio: Cillar de Silos and its 17th-century underground cellars. No published price; contact the winery to book.
- Aranda de Duero: 135 underground cellars survive beneath the town centre. The Bodega de las Ánimas is part of the Wine Architecture Interpretation Centre (CIAVIN), and Bodega Histórica Don Carlos opens another one dating from the 15th century. Finish at Finca Torremilanos (Wednesday to Sunday, except Sunday afternoon) and sleep at Hotel Torremilanos on the estate.
A note on Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine in Sardón de Duero: it's a winery hotel in a 12th-century abbey, but it sits a few kilometres west of the Ribera del Duero DO, outside its boundaries. Its wines carry their own Vino de Pago status.
When to go
Harvest: September · October
Harvest takes up September and October, with some leeway either side: in 2025 the DO picked from 28 August to 28 October.
The Regulatory Council stages the Gran Fiesta de la Vendimia (Grand Harvest Festival) in Aranda de Duero; the ninth edition ran from 2 to 5 September 2025.
The Provincial Wine Museum in Peñafiel keeps two timetables: from October to March it opens 11:30-14:00 and 16:00-19:00, and from April to September 10:30-14:00 and 16:00-20:00, always Tuesday to Sunday.
Plenty of wineries don't open every day. Pago de los Capellanes takes visitors Tuesday to Saturday, Finca Torremilanos Wednesday to Sunday (but not Sunday afternoon), and Viña Sastre on weekday mornings. Check the day before you go.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to book winery visits in Ribera del Duero?
Yes. Protos, Arzuaga, Tinto Pesquera, Viña Sastre, Torremilanos, Cillar de Silos and La Olmilla work by advance booking, while Emilio Moro, Pago de los Capellanes, Villacreces and Emina sell their tours online. Since many don't open every day, booking is also how you find out whether they'll be open.
- How much does a winery visit cost in Ribera del Duero?
Between €15 and €40 per person for the entry-level tour, based on the starting prices we checked in October 2026. La Olmilla starts at €15, Arzuaga at €20 (a short 45-minute tour), Pago de los Capellanes and Viña Sastre at €25, Emina at €27.50, Protos, Villacreces and Torremilanos at €30, Emilio Moro at €38 and Tinto Pesquera at €40. Cillar de Silos and Bodega Histórica Don Carlos don't publish a price we could verify.
- How do I get to Ribera del Duero without a car?
The Wine Route suggests the train to Valladolid, airports at Valladolid, Burgos and Madrid-Barajas, and several bus companies serving Aranda de Duero (Linecar, Alsa, Aisa, Socibus, La Regional, Monbus). Once there, the wineries are spread across the countryside, so without a car the practical option is an organised tour from Madrid, such as Winedering's from €167.
- Is Abadía Retuerta part of Ribera del Duero?
No. It's in Sardón de Duero, just outside the DO. It used to bottle under the VT Castilla y León label and in 2022 gained its own Vino de Pago status. Its hotel, Abadía Retuerta LeDomaine, fits neatly into a trip to the area, but its wines aren't Ribera del Duero.
- What else is there to see in Ribera del Duero besides wineries?
The Provincial Wine Museum inside Peñafiel castle; the 135 underground cellars beneath central Aranda de Duero, where the Bodega de las Ánimas is part of the CIAVIN interpretation centre; and El Cotarro in Moradillo de Roa, with 157 underground cellars and 7 cave wine presses.
- When is the best time to visit Ribera del Duero?
September and October, during the harvest: in 2025 it ran from 28 August to 28 October. The Regulatory Council’s Grand Harvest Festival was held in Aranda de Duero from 2 to 5 September 2025.
