Rioja Alta is the DOCa Rioja subregion covered by the Rioja Alta Wine Route (77 municipalities), and Haro is the obvious base: its Station District, which grew up around the railway, packs seven historic wineries within walking distance. It's the trip for classic Tempranillo-based Rioja and names like Muga, La Rioja Alta, S.A. and CVNE, with Briones and the Sonsierra for a second day.

1- or 2-day route

Day 1. Haro and the Station District

The railway reached Haro in 1863, and warehouses and wineries soon sprang up beside the tracks; the district's first winery was built in 1877. Today the Barrio de la Estación holds seven historic wineries and you can walk down to it from the old town, so the car can stay parked all day.

  • Morning: Bodegas Muga's 90-minute tour with two wines, or 'Discovering La Rioja Alta, S.A.', which pours Lagar de Cervera, Viña Ardanza and Viña Arana Gran Reserva.
  • Lunch: the Barrio de la Estación Passport covers six wines and six tapas at the wine bars of the six wineries that sell it, and it's valid for a year. RODA's street-level wine bar doesn't require a tour.
  • Afternoon: Bodegas Gómez Cruzado (four wines with a snack; bookings are paid in advance), the 'RODA' tour at Bodegas RODA, or CVNE. Just outside the district, Bodegas Martínez Lacuesta runs its standard tour Tuesday to Saturday.
  • Overnight: Eurostars Los Agustinos, a former 1373 convent in the old town, within walking distance of the district.

Day 2. The Sonsierra, Briones, San Asensio and Cenicero

  • San Vicente de la Sonsierra: the 'Sonsierra Experience' at Bodegas Sonsierra takes about two hours (vineyard, winemaking, ageing and three wines); Hacienda López de Haro offers a tour with three wines and a snack.
  • Briones: the Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture, opened in 2004 and covering more than 4,000 m², plus a tour of the Vivanco winery. Note that on most Mondays and Tuesdays there are no visits.
  • San Asensio: the 16th-century cellars of Bodegas Lecea, with a guided tasting of three wines.
  • Cenicero: Bodegas Tritium (closed on Sunday afternoons) or Bodegas Riojanas, whose 'La Galería' tour needs at least four people.

For the second night there are three options: Palacio Tondón in Briñas, a 16th-century palace surrounded by the Tondón vineyards, with its own cellar and wine bar; Los Calaos de Briones, built over a former winery that still has its underground cellar; or Hotel Bodega FyA in Navarrete, inside the winery itself and with its own museum space.

When to go

Harvest: September · October

Harvest runs from September into October, and in Rioja Alta it tends to go right to the end: in 2025 the Regulatory Council said on 28 October that the harvest was nearly over, with Rioja Alta vineyards still being picked the week before.

On 29 June, the feast of San Pedro, Haro holds its Wine Battle at the Riscos de Bilibio, about 6 km from town. It has been a Festival of National Tourist Interest since 2011. If you go, wear clothes you're happy to write off.

The Station District tasting (Haro Station Wine Experience) takes place every two years. The 2026 edition was on 13 June; on that schedule the next one would fall in 2028, though it hasn't been announced yet.

Check closing days before you commit: Vivanco has no visits on most Mondays and Tuesdays and opens Wednesday to Sunday from January to March; Martínez Lacuesta runs its standard tour Tuesday to Saturday; and Tritium is closed on Sunday afternoons.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book winery visits in Haro?

Always a good idea. RODA, Gómez Cruzado, Lecea and Sonsierra work by advance booking, and Gómez Cruzado takes payment upfront. Muga and La Rioja Alta, S.A. take bookings online on their own websites, and La Rioja Alta's premium tastings must be booked.

How much does a winery visit cost in Haro and Rioja Alta?

Between €25 and €35 per person for a standard tour, based on the starting prices we checked in October 2026: Lecea and Hacienda López de Haro from €25, Martínez Lacuesta from €28, Gómez Cruzado from €29, Muga, Tritium and Sonsierra from €30, RODA from €31 and La Rioja Alta, S.A. from €35. CVNE, Vivanco and Bodegas Riojanas don't show a price we could verify.

What is Haro's Station District?

The cluster of wineries that grew up beside the tracks after the railway reached Haro in 1863; the first was built in 1877. Today there are seven historic wineries: Bodegas Bilbaínas, CVNE, Gómez Cruzado, López de Heredia Viña Tondonia, Muga, La Rioja Alta, S.A. and RODA.

How do I get to Haro?

Haro and its Station District are about an hour from Bilbao. If you'd rather not drive, there are organised day trips from Bilbao, such as Winedering's tour pairing CVNE in Haro with Laguardia (from €75).

Can I visit without a car?

In Haro, yes: you can walk from the old town down to the Station District and its seven wineries, and Eurostars Los Agustinos is a short stroll away. For Briones, the Sonsierra or Cenicero you'll need a car or an organised tour.

When is the best time to visit Haro?

September and October, during a harvest that in Rioja Alta runs into late October. For festivities, 29 June is the Wine Battle, and the Station District tasting is held every two years (most recently on 13 June 2026).
