El Bierzo is a district of León province with its own DO, ruled by Mencía for reds and Godello for whites: the 2026 harvest brought in almost 5.4 million kilos of the former and 3.6 million of the latter. It's a trip for travellers who like family-run wineries and modestly priced tours (from €12.50 in our list), and it pairs well with Las Médulas and the Camino de Santiago at Villafranca del Bierzo.

1- or 2-day route
Most of the wineries sit between Ponferrada, Villafranca del Bierzo, Carracedelo and Cacabelos, and this route follows that line from east to west. Don't try to fit in every stop: pick two or three a day.
Day 1. Molinaseca to Cacabelos
- Molinaseca: Encima Wines combines a teaching vineyard, a winery tour and a tasting of your choice. Book at least 48 hours ahead.
- Ponferrada: Heredad Morán & López doesn't publish prices on its website (ask), but its tasting is sold on Winedering from €15.
- Camponaraya: the CIVI (Vine and Wine Interpretation Centre) in the La Cuesta natural area is the Wine Route's information centre. Viñas del Bierzo, in the same village, only takes groups of 8 or more.
- Carracedelo: Bodega del Abad runs a tasting led by a winemaker, Monday to Saturday at 11:00, but only for groups of 6 to 15.
- Cacabelos: the Godello Experience at Bodegas Godelia in Pieros, or Bodegas Gancedo in Quilós, which offers a 4x4 ride through the vineyard. Gancedo takes bookings by phone.
- Overnight: Hotel Palacio de Canedo in Canedo (Arganza), an 18th-century manor with its own winery (Prada a Tope), a restaurant and 32 ha of organic vineyards.
Day 2. Villafranca del Bierzo, Valtuille de Abajo and Arganza
- Morning in Villafranca del Bierzo, a stage town on the Camino Francés: the Romanesque church of Santiago and its Puerta del Perdón, a guided tour of the Castillo de Villafranca (old wine press, cellar and underground rooms) and the La Torre visit at Bodega Pérez Caramés, with three wines. Pérez Caramés opens Tuesday to Sunday, at 11:30 and in the afternoon.
- Valtuille de Abajo: Vinos Valtuille walks you out to its La Tellería vineyard for a Godello and barrel tasting.
- Arganza: Bodegas Pittacum, with a guided tour of about 60 minutes through the vineyard and the 19th-century manor house. If you stay a second night in Canedo, Prada a Tope's Picantal visit takes you through its Mencía and Godello vines.
With half a day to spare, Las Médulas, the ancient Roman gold mines listed as a World Heritage Site, have their visitor centre in Carucedo.
In summer there's another place to stay: Finca Esencial in Villafranca del Bierzo, a 4-room, adults-only boutique hotel on an estate with vines and olive trees along the Camino, which makes its own wine. It only opens from 15 June to 15 September.
When to go
Harvest: August · September · October
Harvest in El Bierzo starts in high summer: in 2026 it began on 5 August and finished on 2 October. August, September and October are the harvest months.
The festival calendar follows suit. The Fiesta del Mosto Tempranero, where the first pressing is offered to Santa María la Real, takes place at the Carracedo monastery; in 2026 it was on Sunday 23 August. The Wine Routes of Spain calendar lists the Cacabelos Harvest Festival and the Ponferrada Wine Fair in August, and the Cacabelos Wine Fair in April. Check each year's dates before planning around them.
Summer is also the only season for Finca Esencial, which opens from 15 June to 15 September.
As for closing days: Pérez Caramés is closed on Mondays and Bodega del Abad doesn't open on Sundays.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to book winery visits in El Bierzo?
Yes, at every winery in our list. Some set a minimum notice (Encima Wines, 48 hours), others book by phone (Gancedo) or via a form (Vinos Valtuille, Castillo de Villafranca), and Heredad Morán & López asks for a deposit.
- How much does a winery visit cost in El Bierzo?
Between €12.50 and €20 per person for the entry-level tour, based on the starting prices we checked in October 2026: Pérez Caramés from €12.50, Gancedo and Bodega del Abad from €15, and Godelia, Encima Wines and Prada a Tope from €20. Pittacum, Castillo de Villafranca, Vinos Valtuille, Heredad Morán & López and Viñas del Bierzo don't publish a price we could verify.
- Can a couple visit any winery?
Not all of them. Bodega del Abad only takes groups of 6 to 15, and Viñas del Bierzo requires at least 8 people. At Prada a Tope the Picantal visit works for two, but the Premium one needs a minimum of six.
- How do I get to El Bierzo?
The A-6 motorway (Madrid–Galicia) crosses the district from east to west. There are daily trains to Galicia, Madrid, León, Barcelona and Irún, the nearest airport is León, and Santiago de Compostela is less than 250 km from Ponferrada.
- Can I do a wine trip in El Bierzo without a car?
It's tricky. Arriving by train is easy, but the wineries are spread across several villages. Without a car, the realistic plan is to base yourself in Ponferrada, where Civitatis sells a wine and tapas tour from €20; to reach the wineries themselves you will need your own transport.
- When is the best time to visit El Bierzo?
August to October, during the harvest, which in 2026 ran from 5 August to 2 October. August also brings the Fiesta del Mosto Tempranero at Carracedo, the Cacabelos Harvest Festival and the Ponferrada Wine Fair.
