Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines
Poland ·
Description
The Wieliczka mine has been producing table salt continuously since the 13th century — the oldest working salt mine in Europe. Over the centuries, miners carved a parallel underground world: chapels decorated with bas-reliefs, monumental statues, brine lakes, and chandeliers whose crystals are reconstituted salt crystals. Tour routes descend more than 100 m below the surface.
Why It's a World Heritage Site
UNESCO recognized the Wieliczka Salt Mine as a unique testimony to mining techniques that evolved from the Middle Ages to the present and to the workers’ art of carving underground chapels.
