Vézelay, Church and Hill
France ·
Description
The Basilica of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine dominates Vézelay from its hilltop, drawing pilgrims since the 11th century to venerate what were believed to be the relics of Mary Magdalene. Its carved tympanum of Christ in Majesty and the capitals of the nave are peaks of Romanesque sculpture. In 1146 Bernard of Clairvaux preached the Second Crusade here; in 1190 Richard the Lionheart and Philip II met here before departing for the Third.
Why It's a World Heritage Site
UNESCO recognized Vézelay as a masterpiece of Romanesque art and architecture and for its exceptional religious and historical significance.
