Um er-Rasas (Kastrom Mefa'a)
Jordan ·
Description
Um er-Rasas began as a Roman military camp and evolved through Byzantine and Umayyad phases. Most of the site remains unexcavated but its highlight is the Church of Saint Stephen, whose 8th-century mosaic floor depicts 27 walled cities of the Holy Land in exquisite detail — the most extensive early Islamic-period mosaic ever found.
Why It's a World Heritage Site
UNESCO recognized Um er-Rasas for exceptional mosaics illustrating artistic continuity between the Byzantine and early Islamic periods in the region.
