Stone Town of Zanzibar
United Republic of Tanzania ·
Description
Stone Town has been a major Swahili trading center for at least a thousand years, controlling trade in spices, ivory and — darker legacy — slaves. Its coral-stone mansions, labyrinthine alleys and famously carved wooden doors reflect influences from Oman, India and Europe. The town is also the birthplace of Freddie Mercury.
Why It's a World Heritage Site
UNESCO recognized Stone Town as an outstanding example of a Swahili coastal trading town and for the fusion and homogenization of cultural traditions from Africa, the Arab region, India and Europe.
