Srebarna Nature Reserve

Bulgaria ·

Description

On the Danube's banks, Lake Srebrna is a biodiversity oasis amid the Bulgarian agricultural plains. Its reed beds host the world's westernmost Dalmatian pelican colony, along with pygmy cormorants, purple herons, and the rare bittern. During migrations, over 100 bird species stop here. Observation platforms allow watching this ornithological spectacle without disturbing the birds.

Why It's a World Heritage Site

Srebarna protects one of Europe's most important wetlands for waterfowl, especially as a breeding site for the endangered Dalmatian pelican. The lake documents Danubian freshwater ecosystems and provides critical habitat for globally threatened species.
