Description
Begun in 1030 under Conrad II, Speyer Cathedral was conceived as the burial church of the Salian emperors and became the largest Romanesque structure ever built. Its groin-vaulted nave, innovative for its time, influenced sacred architecture across medieval Europe. Eight Holy Roman Emperors and kings are interred in its crypt, making it one of the great dynastic mausolea of Europe.
