Quseir Amra

Description

This small but remarkable desert retreat was built by an Umayyad prince around 730 AD. Its modest stone exterior hides vaulted halls and baths covered in frescoes showing hunting scenes, naked bathers, zodiac constellations and portraits of the vanquished kings of the ancient world — astonishing survivals in a religious culture that later rejected figurative art.

Why It's a World Heritage Site

UNESCO recognized Quseir Amra as a unique example of early Islamic art and an exceptional testimony to Umayyad civilization.

UNESCO Criteria
