Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Vietnam ·

Description

In the Annamite Range, 400 million years of karst evolution have created over 300 caves of mind-boggling dimensions. Hang Son Doong, discovered in 2009, is the world's largest cave: it could house a 40-story skyscraper. Underground rivers traverse kilometers of galleries with 70-meter stalactites. The primary forest above the karst harbors tigers, langurs, and 500 plant species yet to be catalogued.

Why It's a World Heritage Site

Phong Nha-Ke Bang contains evidence of Earth's history over an immense period (since the Paleozoic), with karst formations of exceptional complexity. The park includes some of the world's largest caves and highly biodiverse tropical forest ecosystems over the karst.
