Petra
Jordan ·
Description
Petra is architecture made geology. The Treasury emerges at the end of the Siq like an apparition of rose stone, its columns carved into the cliff by Nabataean hands 2,000 years ago. Beyond, an amphitheater, royal tombs and monasteries await among canyons of impossible colors. At sunset, the stone burns in fiery hues.
Why It's a World Heritage Site
Petra was the prosperous capital of the Nabataeans, masters of trade and hydraulic engineering in the desert. The city uniquely combines Eastern and Hellenistic traditions. Its water management system in an arid environment was revolutionary and supported a population of 30,000.
