Old City of Berne
Switzerland ·
Description
Founded in 1191 on a meander of the Aar River, Bern preserves its medieval structure intact with unique coherence in Europe. Six kilometers of covered arcades (Lauben) shelter shops trading since the 15th century. Eleven Renaissance fountains, each with an allegorical sculpture, punctuate the cobblestone streets. The Zytglogge, astronomical clock tower, inspired Einstein, who lived across from it when he revolutionized physics.
Why It's a World Heritage Site
Bern exceptionally exemplifies late medieval urban planning adapted to river promontory topography. The city preserves its original layout and a notable architectural ensemble from the 15th-18th centuries, with the characteristic arcades and intact urban landscape that define its identity.
