Mantua and Sabbioneta
Italy ·
Description
Mantua and Sabbioneta represent two different faces of Renaissance urban planning. Mantua, built on an old Roman core, was transformed by the Gonzaga dynasty into a magnificent Renaissance capital with the Palazzo Ducale and Mantegna’s Camera degli Sposi. Sabbioneta, created from scratch in the late 16th century, is an archetypal ideal city — a fortified grid with palace, theater and synagogue built in a single grand vision.
Why It's a World Heritage Site
UNESCO recognized Mantua and Sabbioneta as outstanding complementary examples of the urban, architectural and artistic realizations of the Renaissance.
