Historic City of Ayutthaya

Thailand ·

Description

Ayutthaya was the splendid capital of Siam for four centuries, larger than London at its peak. Today, brick prangs and golden stupas emerge among ancient trees. The Buddha head trapped in fig tree roots symbolizes how nature reclaims what was once grand. At sunset, the ruins burn in golden hues.

Why It's a World Heritage Site

Ayutthaya was capital of Siam from 1350 until its destruction by the Burmese in 1767. At its peak it had one million inhabitants and was an international trade center. Ruins of temples, palaces and monasteries attest to its past splendor.
