Description

Siena is Florence's Gothic rival that time froze. Its Piazza del Campo, shaped like a seashell tilting toward Palazzo Pubblico, is considered Italy's most beautiful square. Twice a year, the Palio transforms this plaza into a racing circuit where neighborhoods compete in a medieval tradition that unleashes passions. The cathedral striped in white and black-green marble is a jewel of Italian Gothic.

Why It's a World Heritage Site

Siena represents an exceptional example of a medieval city that has preserved its Gothic character. UNESCO recognized the influence of its urban planning on European art, exceptional architectural coherence, and the continuity of traditions like the Palio.
