Historic Centre of San Gimignano

Italy ·

Description

In the 13th century, San Gimignano boasted 72 tower-houses built by noble families competing in height as signs of power. Fourteen survive today, creating a unique skyline visible from miles around in the Tuscan hills. Within the walls, frescoes of the Sienese school decorate churches, and the Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo squares preserve the medieval atmosphere. Local vernaccia has been a famous wine since Dante's time.
