Founded in 969 AD by the Fatimids, Islamic Cairo was for centuries one of the most important cities of the Muslim world, later the capital of the Mamluk sultanate. It preserves one of the highest concentrations of medieval Islamic monuments anywhere — mosques, madrasas, hammams, caravanserais and mausolea — ranging from the 9th-century Ibn Tulun mosque to 19th-century Muhammad Ali complex above the Citadel.
