Hiraizumi – Temples, Gardens and Archaeological Sites
Japan ·
Description
In the 12th century, Hiraizumi rivaled Kyoto as a center of Buddhist culture, ruled by the Northern Fujiwara clan. Chuson-ji temple's golden Konjiki-do pavilion, covered entirely in gold leaf, survives as a dazzling relic of the era. The Buddhist Pure Land gardens of Motsu-ji were designed to represent paradise on earth.
Why It's a World Heritage Site
UNESCO recognized Hiraizumi as an outstanding example of a type of garden representing Buddhist Pure Land and of the fusion of indigenous Japanese religion with Buddhism.
