Danube Delta

Romania ·

Description

After flowing 2,860 kilometers through ten countries, the Danube splits into three main arms and hundreds of channels forming a 5,800 km² aquatic ecosystem. Dalmatian pelicans glide over floating forests of white water lilies. Lipovan fishermen perpetuate ancestral ways of life in villages accessible only by boat. It's the most extensive and least altered wetland on the continent.

Why It's a World Heritage Site

The Danube Delta harbors the largest pelican colony outside Africa, over 300 bird species, and 45 fish species. As an active delta in constant formation, it documents unique geological and ecological processes while preserving traditional human communities harmoniously integrated with the ecosystem.
