Complex of Hue Monuments

Viet Nam ·

Description

From 1802 to 1945, Hue was the capital of Vietnam under the Nguyen dynasty. Its imperial city, modeled loosely on Beijing’s Forbidden City, sits inside a moated citadel on the Perfume River. American bombing during the 1968 Tet Offensive destroyed many buildings, but restoration is ongoing and the elaborate royal tombs scattered in the countryside survive beautifully.

Why It's a World Heritage Site

UNESCO recognized Hue as an outstanding example of a planned feudal eastern capital and for its integration of traditional oriental philosophy with the natural landscape.

UNESCO Criteria

(iii)Testimony to cultural tradition
(iv)Example of building or landscape type
