Description
Hue was imperial Vietnam's heart for 143 years. The Citadel, inspired by Beijing, holds palaces of golden dragons and lacquered wood pavilions. Along the Perfume River, imperial tombs hide among lotus gardens and pines. War destroyed much, but each restoration reveals more beauty of this Asian Versailles.
Why It's a World Heritage Site
Hue was the Nguyen dynasty capital and Vietnam's only example of planned imperial city. It combines Chinese influences with local traditions. Imperial tombs are masterpieces of landscape architecture.
