Changdeokgung Palace Complex

Republic of Korea ·

Description

Built in 1405 as a secondary palace for the Joseon dynasty, Changdeokgung became the primary royal residence for 270 years. Unlike the geometric rigor of Chinese imperial palaces, it is admired for the way its pavilions and walls follow the contours of the hill behind. The Huwon or Secret Garden at the back covers 32 hectares of ponds, pavilions and ancient trees reserved for royal use.

Why It's a World Heritage Site

UNESCO recognized Changdeokgung as an outstanding example of Far Eastern palace architecture and garden design, exceptional for its integration with the natural topography.

UNESCO Criteria
