Description

Pompeii is a time machine of volcanic ash. On August 24, 79 AD, Vesuvius buried the city under 6 meters of ash, preserving streets, houses, frescoes and body casts of inhabitants. Herculaneum, smaller but better preserved, shows even wood and fabric. It's the most complete portrait of Roman life that exists.

Why It's a World Heritage Site

Pompeii and Herculaneum are the only archaeological sites showing complete Roman life, frozen in an instant by Vesuvius's eruption. Frescoes, mosaics and structures are exceptional.
